Speeding Ticket

Speeding Ticket Fines

Speeding is probably the most common charge laid by police. Not a day goes by where police aren’t keeping a close eye on the roads, in nearly every jurisdiction across the country. But just because they are common, does not mitigate the serious impact a single speeding ticket can have on your licence, driving record and insurance. Some speeding offences even carry an immediate roadside suspension.

In Ontario, speeding ticket fines depend on the rate of speed in excess of the speed limit.

Contrary to popular belief, insurance rates are actually impacted by convictions on your driving record, not just demerit points.

The following fines are accurate as of the time of publishing this chart. It is important to note that a “victim fine surcharge” is also added to each ticket, in addition to the set fine. School Zones, Construction Zones and Community Safety Zones also increase the set fine for speeding offences.

Speeding 50+ Over/ Stunt Driving

There are a number of driving actions that constitute “stunt driving” under the Highway Traffic Act. Speeding in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit is one of those actions.

The consequences for this offence are severe and lasting. Being charged with this offence results in an immediate roadside suspension of 7 days, along with a 7-day vehicle impoundment.

Further, an offender charged with Stunt Driving faces a minimum $2000.00 fine, which can reach up to $10,000.00 and up to 6 months in jail, depending on the circumstances.

A conviction can also lead to a driver’s licence suspension for up to 2 years on a first conviction, and up to 10 years on subsequent convictions.

With this kind of conviction on your driving record, it is also likely that your insurer will cancel your policy or put you under a high-risk “facilities” coverage.

This is a charge that you NEED to fight! It is a mistake to represent yourself in a Stunt Driving trial.

Prevail Paralegal Services will work hard to fight your case or to negotiate for a reduced charge that will be easier to digest. Consultations are FREE and confidential!
